Behind the Wheel Training

To apply for your beginner's permit, you must be at least 15 years old. If you're under 18 years old, your parents must accompany you and you must provide these documents:
  • Contract for a Non-Commercial Credential Instructions and Training
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of residency (student ID, SC State ID, Military ID)

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires that teens under 17 years old complete Driver's Education before applying for a driver's license. Driver's Ed is a combination of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training that teaches young drivers the basics of operating a vehicle. It also covers essential theories and techniques for safe and responsible driving.

Combining your driver's education with behind-the-wheel driver's training will allow you to immediately apply the safe driving practices you've learned in the classroom. The driving instructor will provide you with valuable information that will help make you a safe and consistent driver. Your behind-the-wheel training will provide you with hands on driver training and help you develop the skills to perform on your road test. You'll be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to take the responsibilities of a new driver and start driving by yourself.
